My list wasn’t the best. I kept thinking it could be better, but a week had gone by, and there I was back in the store with Jordan reading over my less than stellar list. He pulled out a pen and crossed out number four completely then altered number two and three before sliding the list back to me.

“Stuff into gold?”

My shoulders sagged. “What? Can’t that be done?”

“No.” He shook his head, chuckling. “Even enchanting objects is going to be a push. Tracking is simple enough—make skin particles left behind or footprints or scents more prominent. Protection charm—plenty of those from a basic defensive illusion to various shields. Plasma—utilizing lightning is the same as air or water or fire or anything else—elemental manipulation. Enchanting—it’s not exactly how magic works.”

“So I can’t put a spell innately in an object. I mean, what about runes or Rio’s tattoos,” I pointed out.

Jordan nodded. “Which is why it isn’t crossed out. I’ll go more into runes, but it wouldn’t be what you’re thinking. You can’t change the core of an object. It’s like when you manipulate fire. It’s an extension and intensification of heat. Try turning a pen into a sword, and you'd have the most fragile sword in existence.”

I stuck the list back in my pocket. “So, we’re done until next week right? Or can we do more than one lesson a week? I’ve been practicing in the empty classrooms around campus. Look!”

I concentrated and made the books on the shelves jump around before lifting the table with the air. Jordan nodded, and I pulled out my new lighter and did a few tricks with fire sending it circling around the room in the shape of a dragon. I didn’t expect praise. Jordan wasn’t keen on such niceties.

“Books burn, Jon.”

I let the fire go out. “Come on—I’m getting better. I’ve practiced with the wards—even warded my bed.”

The last bit got a laugh out of him. “And when was the last time you spent time with your friends?”

“Well, later today, but I eat with them all the time, and we study.” I sounded incredibly lame even to my own ears.

“Go, be a mortal for a while. We’re done for today. I want you to work on controlling smoke, and don’t even try plasma when I’m not there; we’ll do it next week. There’s a storm on its way, so it’ll be easy to disguise. Practice shielding like I taught you.” He summoned his protective suit, and I did my best to do the same. I had almost manipulated my shield into a complete body covering, but every once in a while my head sort of got left out. The shield did it again this time, leaving my forehead a target.

“Yeah.” I let the shield drop. “I’ll work on it. Bye!”

“Be careful,” Jordan told me as I raced out the door toward the park to meet up with the guys.
